The first time I saw a green smoothie, I was a little dubious. No, not just a little. A lot. I’m an adventurous eater, but I was pretty sure I was not going to like it.
I’m sure you know where this story is going. It was fabulous. I loved it and I’ve been a convert ever since. But I’m aware that many people are turned off by the colour of some foods. The bright turquoise colour of bubble gum ice cream, for example, is something I simply can’t stomach.
When my kids were little, I used to “sneak” vegetables like broccoli into my homemade spaghetti sauce. It was easy, as the rich red tomato sauce disguised the additions. If you’re trying to get used to the idea of green smoothies, or attempting to convert your family members, this 50 Shades of Purple green smoothie may be the answer. Face it, if you’re anything like me, occasionally your best attempt at a green smoothie turns into something closely resembling pond muck.
No pond muck here. Just pure sweet purple goodness, flavoured with blackberries with lots of healthy kale and baby greens hidden deep inside. Ripe banana provides the sweetness, hemp hearts add protein (and tons of other good-for-you things) and rice milk or almond milk (or milk of your choice) helps to blend it all together. The blackberries in this smoothie provide an excellent source of fiber and antioxidants as well. This 50 Shades of Purple green smoothie provides me with a nutritious start to my day. Try it!
Still doubtful? Try one of my other five favourite smoothies.
