This Chunky Monkey Chocolate Smoothie has your favourite chocolate, peanut butter and banana flavours in a healthy breakfast or post work-out smoothie.

Routines. I have a love-hate relationship with them.
Giving up the unstructured time of lazy summer days is hard. Lazing in the sun, swimming in the lake, eating dinner on the deck . . . don't you just love summer? But then, fall holds the promise of new adventures, fresh opportunities, and different activities. Embracing new routines helps me to move on and relish all that fall brings. One routine that never changes with the seasons is starting my day with a protein-packed breakfast, most often a smoothie, like this Chunky Monkey Chocolate Smoothie.
I've made smoothies for eons. They're the easiest healthy breakfast I can imagine: just one blender bowl and one glass to wash. I have a repertoire of favourites combinations that I rotate through every week.
To make my morning smoothie-making-routine efficient, I even have an Official Smoothie Cupboard. It's right above the counter where my blender sits and it's full of superfoods like chia seeds, hemp seeds, cacao nibs, coconut oil, Spirulina, kelp powder, psyllium husks and more.
I know my favourite recipes off by heart and rotate through them each week. I've used Silk non-dairy beverages for years alternating between the Unsweetened Coconut, Almond and Cashew. I like that they are low in calories and fat, a good source of calcium and Vitamin D and that I can buy them without added sweeteners.
But life just got a lot easier. Making smoothies, I've discovered, does not have to involve following a recipe with a long list of ingredients. I just discovered Vega One Nutritional Shake, even though this company has been around for years.
I was happy to discover that Vega products are completely plant-based. This is not a whey-based or soy-based protein powder. It has no dairy, no soy, and no added sugar, it's Non-GMO product verified, and with 20 grams of protein per serving, Omega-3's, antioxidants and probiotics, I feel completely confident that I'm getting everything I used to measure into my old smoothie recipes and so much more.
For this Chunky Monkey Chocolate Smoothie, I used the Chocolate-flavoured Vega One Nutritional Shake mix and Silk Almond beverage and I added frozen bananas, peanut butter and extra cocoa. Vega products use stevia as a plant-based sweetener. It's too sweet for my taste, so adding the extra cocoa powder was an easy way to cut back on the sweetness and it added to its rich chocolate taste.
I decided this Chunky Monkey Chocolate Smoothie would be equally good for dessert, so I adapted my recipe slightly by adding half an avocado to the blender to make it a little thicker (and to add some heart-healthy fat). I topped it with chopped walnuts and chocolate chips for a little decadence, and devoured it, knowing that I was getting a host of essential nutrients in that little dessert glass.

Chunky Monkey Chocolate Smoothie
- 1 ½ cups Silk non-dairy beverage (I used Almond beverage)
- 1 scoop scoop Vega One All-in-One Nutritional Shake (or 1 package)
- ½ frozen banana
- 1 tbsp cocoa or cacao powder
- For a Chunky Monkey Dessert Smoothie, add half an avocado to the ingredients above
- Put all ingredients in a blender and process until smooth.
- To make a Chunky Monkey Dessert Smoothie: add half an avocado to the above ingredients and blend until smooth.
- Garnish with chopped walnuts or peanuts, chocolate chips and a sprinkle of sea salt, if desired. Serve with a spoon.
