Are you tired of your usual breakfast? Switch up your routine and make overnight oats for a change. Here are five easy topping ideas to make you fall in love with breakfast again!

small jars of overnight oats with different toppings

I like my favourite chocolate almond smoothie and Air Fryer French Toast Sticks but sometimes routines just become boring. This week, however, I fell in love with breakfast all over again.

I hadn't made overnight oatmeal for years, likely because my mornings are more relaxed now that I'm no longer rushing out of the house to work. But I suddenly remembered how much I used to like having my little breakfast-in-a-jar ready for me every morning.

If you haven't made overnight oats for a while, here are the easy instructions and five ideas for toppings.

The sky is the limit for add-ins. Just top your base of rolled oats, the milk of your choice, and chia seeds with different fruit and nut combinations. Add nuts just before serving so they keep their crunch.

    Overnight Oats Topping Ideas

    Try these favourite varieties!

    • Strawberry-Banana with Chopped Walnuts
    • Mixed Berry with Hemp Seeds
    • Pineapple Coconut
    • Pineapple Orange with Flaked Almonds
    • Chunky Monkey

Sometimes I eat them cold, straight from the jar, and on other days I transfer them to a small pot to heat gently, or heat them in a microwave. If I warm them up, I like to add a bit more milk to make them creamier.

How long will Overnight Oats last?

I find these will last for up to five days in the fridge. Make a batch on a Sunday afternoon and look forward to breakfast all week long!

That chunky monkey is calling my name! I love overnight oats in the summer, and why not add a little dark chocolate? I'm going to mix it up later this evening and can't wait to wake up to such a fun breakfast (without having to wait for anything!).

Thanks, Kathi! I just made some with peaches and blueberries too. They're a nice change from my usual smoothie.

So am I right in understanding that these oats are never cooked? You just soak them in milk overnight basically, add your toppings and eat them?

        Hi Rachel,
You're right. Soaking them in milk softens them and makes them digestible. Of course, if you want to heat them up on the stove top or in the microwave, that's fine too. Sometimes I just want a nice warm bowl of oatmeal! Thanks for your question. I'll reword the post to make that really clear!

I love overnight oats! It's a great alternative to the typical toast and coffee, plus they make you feel full and satisfied. My favorite flavor from your recipe is the chunky monkey, PB and chocolate chunks...what a heavenly combo!

Thanks, Gemma! They're great to have for a change. I'm looking forward to checking out your blog. I think you're in Barcelona? We spent a month in Spain last spring and loved every part of it. Great food!!
