A fresh, sweet-tasting nutritious green smoothie recipe! This pineapple orange green smoothie with microgreens adds both hemp hearts and chia seeds for extra protein and healthy Omega-3's. A healthy breakfast or refreshing post-workout smoothie!

Two glasses of pineapple orange green smoothie with a small bowl of microgreens

While some food trends come and go, smoothies never go out of style. This pineapple orange green smoothie has been a favourite of mine for years.

While I used to make a green smoothie with spinach, lately I've switched to using microgreens instead. I buy them in a clamshell pack and they're actually labeled "Smoothie Mix." I love that I'm getting a variety of greens. The one I buy has pea shoot, bok choy, kohlrabi, radish, fenugreek, broccoli, kale and red cabbage microgreens!

I have several other smoothie recipes here on Flavour and Savour. Check out my Smoothie and Shakes category for inspiration!

Ready to make the best green smoothie? Here's what you'll need.

    🛒 Ingredients

banana: the riper the better! Save those spotty bananas to make this green smoothie. You won't need to add any extra sweetener.

pineapple: I use fresh pineapple, but frozen or canned will work, too. Pineapple is a good aid to digestion as it contains bromelain which helps to reduce gut inflammation.

orange juice: fresh, unsweetened, or freshly squeezed, or add a whole, peeled orange. You may need to add a little water or coconut water to get a pourable consistency.

greens: I like to use microgreens. They're rich in flavour and often contain higher nutrient levels than more mature vegetable greens. You can also substitute other greens like spinach, baby kale, or mixed greens. If you are new to green smoothies, start with mild flavoured green, avoiding mature kale for now until you develop a taste for it. And start with a small amount of greens, gradually increasing as you and your family members get used to these.

chia seeds: help to thicken a smoothie and add a punch of nutrition! Chia seeds are an excellent source of fiber, protein, healthy fat (Omega-3's) and many other nutrients.

hemp hearts: also an excellent source of protein, fat, Omega-3's, calcium, magnesium and other minerals. You can read more about the health benefits of hemp hearts.

    👍🏼 Helpful time-saving tips

Freeze bananas when they become overripe. Slice and spread out on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and freeze until solid. Transfer to a container or a zip-closure bag to store in the freezer.

Do the same with fresh pineapple. That way you'll always have the ingredients ready to make this pineapple orange green smoothie!

This is so good! I'm starting the New Year off with healthy breakfasts and this was the first one I tried. Loving it! I made it with spinach as I didn't have micro greens.
Thanks for keeping me on track haha.
