Tiny dessert jars with vegan chocolate mousse

This avocado chocolate mousse recipe has made the rounds on Pinterest for a while now. It's so good that I know it's here to stay!

I've made it many times since I first posted this recipe way back in 2018, and I've updated the photos.

The first time we were served this amazing vegan chocolate mousse, I had to consciously pull myself back into the conversation when I found myself drifting off into chocolate heaven with every silky spoonful.

    It's just that good.

❤️ Why you'll love this recipe

    • Healthy: It's a healthy dessert choice, without sacrificing the flavor of a traditional chocolate mousse.
    • Delicious: Made with a base of avocado and banana, this dessert is shockingly good and as close to a high-fat whipping cream-style mousse as you can get without indulging in all that nonsense.
    • Quick and Easy: You can make it in about 10 minutes or so! Blend it before dinner and chill it to enjoy afterward.

    🛒 Ingredients

The ingredients in this dairy-free chocolate mousse may surprise you!

I've experimented with different versions since I first tasted this mousse. After tweaking and testing, I've found the one that I like best.

Cacao or cocoa, avocado, banana . . . this does not sound like an enticing combination, but it will amaze you.

Check to see if you have everything you need.

    • avocados: you'll need two ripe avocados. You'll know they're ripe if they yield to gentle fingertip pressure.
    • cacao or cocoa powder: your choice
    • banana: one very ripe one will give this mousse a silky natural sweetness
    • almond milk: or other plant-based milk of your choice
    • pure maple syrup
    • vanilla extract:  pure
    • cinnamon: just a hint heightens the chocolate flavor of this mousse.
    • sea salt: just ¼ teaspoon, and optional flaky sea salt for garnish
a spoonful of vegan chocolate mousse made with avocado and banana

    🥄 Instructions

Simply put everything in your food processor or blender and blend until smooth and creamy.

Spoon into dessert dishes, cover and chill. Before serving, add a topping or two.

    Suggested toppings for chocolate mousse

Try any of the following to make this healthy chocolate avocado mousse extra special:

    • coconut
    • cocoa nibs
    • chocolate shavings
    • flaked almonds
    • finely chopped toasted hazelnuts
    • finely chopped salted pistachios
    • strawberries
    • raspberries
    • flaky sea salt

A sprinkle of flaky sea salt, like Fleur de Sel, on top also transforms this dessert from good to great, heightening all the other fabulous flavors.

The crunch from the cocoa nibs and the toasted nuts is amazing, so be generous when you garnish this dessert.

    ❓Is this a healthy dessert?

    Is avocado chocolate mousse healthy?

Avocados are loaded with heart-healthy omega-3's. Cocoa is one of the richest sources of polyphenols which are naturally occurring antioxidants.

Bananas are an excellent source of potassium. And to top it off, this delicious chocolate mousse has no refined sugar! It's naturally sweetened with maple syrup.

Avocados provide healthy fats that make you feel satisfied, reducing sugar cravings. This dessert is a win-win both in flavor and nutrition!

    How to store chocolate mousse

Store leftover chocolate mousse covered in the fridge. It will stay fresh for 3 days or so. You don't have to worry about the avocado turning brown. It doesn't!

Make a healthy dessert choice with this vegan Chocolate Mousse.  Indulge. Enjoy!

Thank you for this recipe. My mother in law found out she has diverticulitis and can no longer have fruits with seeds, dairy, nuts or fibrous food. I am going to make this for her for thanksgiving and hopefully she will love it. She can have ripe bananas though so I can’t wait to try it for her!

This was SOOO good. I don't do dairy, so this was awesome instead of the usual cream or milk. And easy. And not to sweet. My DH and I don't like real sweet things anymore. For us, I divided it into 6 small cups and it was just right for a dessert after a meal. And I love how whole the ingredients in it are. FWIW, I needed to add quite a bit more almond milk.

Should I substitute more banana (and how much more banana) if I cannot use avocado or is there something else I should use instead of the avocado? 🙂 Thank you

        Hi Az,
I'm not sure how to advise you. Since the base of this recipe relies on avocado, I'm not sure how it would turn out with an extra banana. It would definitely be sweeter, and perhaps not as thick, but it might be really delicious! Let me know if you try it!

LOVE LOVE LOVE it! Just made this 🙂 Have a quick question. How long can these stay in the fridge? I happened to have 4 times the quantity of avocado so I multiplied everything by 4! Quite a big batch haha

        Hi Dina,
Thanks so much for letting me know! I love it when I hear how much people have enjoyed my recipes. To store in the fridge, cover with plastic film first and they should last for up to 5 days. Enjoy!

This looks really good. I'm going to try it this weekend. Most of the other dairy-free mousse recipes I found included coconut cream. I don't have anything against coconut cream, but with the dark choc, sounded fairly heavy. I'm looking for a somewhat lighter texture. So, I'm guessing the avocado and banana provide the thickening that the coconut cream has in the other recipes?

        Hi Susan,
Yes, you're right--the avocado and the banana make this a thick and creamy dessert. Using very ripe bananas adds natural sweetness. It's very filling, so I suggest serving it in small portions. Hope you like it!

Yes, definitely! Good question, as I'm sure others may have wondered that, too.
