Can you think of a better way to start your day than with chocolate?

This vegan Chocolate Almond Milk Smoothie is my favourite go-to breakfast when I want a change from my other morning smoothies, (or when I don't want to run out to the garden in my PJ's to pick some kale or sprouts for a green smoothie.)

❤️ Why you'll love this recipe

Made with almond milk, almond butter, banana, dates, cocoa and hemp hearts, this vegan chocolate smoothie is a rich and creamy high-protein way to get your day off to a great energizing start!

It also makes a great late afternoon pick-me-up! When you're feeling a little low, or a little hungry, reach for this healthy smoothie instead of something with empty calories.

    🛒 Chocolate Almond Smoothie Ingredients

While the photos here show two glasses, the recipe in the recipe card below is for one serving. Check to see if you have everything you'll need:

    • almond milk (or any plant-based milk)
    • ripe banana
    • almond butter
    • Medjool dates, pitted
    • ground cacao or unsweetened cocoa
    • hemp seeds (hemp hearts)
    • ice cubes
    • cacao nibs or cocoa and cinnamon or flaked almonds for garnish

    🥄 Instructions

Just whir everything in a blender, grab a glass or a travel mug and begin your day with a burst of energy.

    ❓Readers' Questions

Are hemp hearts good for you?

Hemp hearts, also known as hemp seeds, contain high levels of omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids which may help to support cholesterol levels, your immune system, and may help regulate your metabolism. They're also a good source of iron, Vitamin E, manganese, magnesium, B-Vitamins and zinc. Yes, they're good for you!

    👍🏼 Helpful Tip

Plan ahead! Slice and freeze overripe bananas to add to this smoothie! Peel spotty bananas, slice into rounds about ¼ to ½ inch thick and arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet.

Once they're frozen, transfer the slices to a freezer container or freezer bag, and use a few at a time to make your smoothies. A natural sweetener!

    🔁 Possible Variations

Substitute your favorite plant-based milk for the almond milk, or use cocoa instead of cacao if you prefer. It will still taste like chocolate heaven.

Swap peanut butter or other nut butter for the almond butter. Try this Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Smoothie (made without bananas.)

Make it a mocha! Add ¼ cup of brewed coffee to the blender to give it a mocha flavor, like this Mocha Almond Smoothie Bowl recipe.

Like it thicker? Add a teaspoon or two of chia seeds.
