Health benefits of Turmeric Pick-Me-Up
Turmeric, for starters. It’s a powerful anti-inflammatory. Even more important, it contains curcumin, the yellow-orange pigment in turmeric that has been found to benefit those who suffer from inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s, and rheumatoid arthritis. It’s even suspected to offer protection from certain cancers and may help to lower cholesterol.
Ginger is a natural aid to digestion with anti-inflammatory properties. Coconut water provides an incredible source of electrolytes like potassium and sodium, lemon gives us Vitamin C, and honey is rich in minerals.

We returned from our vacation in the sun and promptly threw ourselves headlong into holiday preparations. After catching up on the sleep we lost due to our red-eye flight home (one of those lovely head-bobbing sleeps) we headed out and cut down our Christmas tree, decorated it, made our home look Christmasy, put up the outdoor lights, re-acquainted ourselves with the rest of our family and sampled these decadent Cranberry White Chocolate Macaroons.
Enjoying my favourite holiday foods is just one of the things I look forward to at this time of year. Butter tarts, biscotti, coconut crisps, gingerbread . . . the list goes on . . . but so will the pounds and my immune system will take a beating. This year, I’m determined to stay healthy, despite indulging. And this Turmeric Pick-Me-Up drink is one way to do so.
Be sure to include the black pepper in this turmeric tonic as it is necessary to allow your body to utilize all the benefits of curcumin.
I love this juice in late afternoon when my energy level is lagging, but the turmeric drink I often make in the evening is this Warm Turmeric Cinnamon Milk.
This “Golden Milk” is a sleep-inducer. If I ever have trouble sleeping, a mug of this warm sweet milk made with almond milk (or your choice of milk) and turmeric works wonders for me.
So go ahead and enjoy your favourite snacks this holiday season, but consider this gentle way to detoxify and boost your immune system, too.
If you find it has stained your countertop or your blender container, I’ve found rubbing the area with a small amount of vegetable oil, followed by a general scrub with your usual cleanser will remove the stain. I also drink this turmeric tonic with a straw to avoid discolouring my teeth!
- 1 cup coconut water
- 1 inch knob of fresh ginger, peeled
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 1 tbsp honey
- pinch of sea salt
- pinch of black pepper
- Blend all ingredients in a high-speed blender. Strain if desired.
- Serve with a stir stick and a straw. Add ice to make a refreshing cold drink.
